Soundswell have been working with two Early Years settings in Birmingham - and they are well on their way to success!
Both nurseries serve catchment areas of significant social and economic deprivation. Many children arrive in nursery with a number of additional needs: these include general developmental delay and most children have speech and language needs (SLCN). The 2 year old intake includes children who are typically at the 8-20 months level.
In addition to delivering therapy, Soundswell offer a range of support for Early Years, such as strategies to develop Attention & Listening skills and training which helps settings make the best use of the Wellcomm speech and language toolkit . However, a number of settings have found that the best place to start is by inviting us to spend an agreed amount of time with them, looking at the environment and observing adult/child communication opportunities and interaction.
In partnership with staff in settings, this is the first part of the Soundswell Phase 1 Early Years model – a way of working which has grown out of lots of different sessions delivered in a range of settings and has been developed in response to severe budget cuts and continuing huge needs across the city.
We know the impact that communication has on successful teaching and learning. Nursery provides a golden opportunity to maximise communication success right from the start and for some of our children this is the first real chance they have to accelerate speech and language skills.
