Recent training At Rubery looked at how questions move through 4 levels of complexity, starting with concrete things and then moving towards the abstract. Pitching questions at the right level – i.e. at the child’s level of understanding – makes a huge difference!
Looking at how seemingly very simple language is actually really complex is quite a new and very important approach in terms of best being able to support children most effectively.
The levels of confidence amongst the staff in terms of the key learning points (KLPs) the training covered were ascertained before the course began (see A – I on the table below).
On a scale of 1-5 (1 being least and 5 being most) staff were asked how confident they felt about the KLPs
At the end of the course staff were asked to repeat the exercise. The results were compared and a summary produced. See table below. On the right you can see the gains made.
The summary is accompanied by a more detailed analysis with pointers for where next, allowing the senior leadership to measure the impact for staff.
