Jo

My Career so far.....

I qualified in 1987, my first post was a 'mixed ' post, but I quickly realised that children's therapy was my passion.

After learning the ropes ( I found out pretty rapidly that a degree doesn't equip you for the real world of work ), I became head of children's SaLT in North Warwickshire, and then moved to Dudley where I eventually became service manager. As a result of changes in the NHS I was made a clinical lead for children's services in Dudley- which included SaLT, Physio, OT, Respite care and a children's assessment centre.

My favourite client group....

Mainstream primary school children. Language and communication is the key to all learning, and there is such a vast amount that children need to learn during their time at primary school that having a communication difficulty can affect a child's life chances for ever.

My favourite resource …...

A 15 piece inset puzzle which is no longer available to buy. Mine is old and worn now, but I use it to assess and treat everything from speech sounds, phonological awareness, language ( understanding and expression), vocabulary, auditory memory.. the list goes on.

Advice for parents....

Find out what motivates or interests your child and talk to them about it.

Don't over correct, model words and sentences for them to copy and praise ALL attempts even if they aren't quite right

Advice for anyone considering SaLT as a career....

Go for it!!

It is an immensely rewarding job, but be prepared for a different kind of university experience form your friends. It's full days,  5 days a week and placements in holidays.

Spend some time with a SaLT before you apply, you'll be expected to have done this if you are interviewed for a place at uni

Funny story....

I once had a parent tell me she thought her son's speech was poor because he had 'crustaceans in his ears'. I didn't know what she meant, but advised her to take him to the G.P for a check up !!
